Biostimulants are increasingly used in agricultural production worldwide and can effectively contribute to overcoming the challenge posed by the growing and continuous demand for food by the world population. Currently, there are more than 840 million people with insufficient food availability. In the next 20 years, we will need 50% more food, 30% more water and 50% more energy to feed 1.2 billion more people in the world: however, in the last 20 years population growth has been much higher than the increase in production per hectare of cultivated land.

Sources from the organization affirmed that, "We need a new green revolution: we must produce healthier food and in greater quantities, reducing the impact on the environment." “The biostimulant industry can contribute to success in this great challenge. "With the new products it is possible to improve the quality and quantity of agricultural production and make the use of fertilizers and pesticides more effective and efficient."

The market value of biostimulants is estimated between 200 and 400 million euros, with an annual growth of more than 10% and annual investments in research and development of between 3 and 10% of the turnover. Scientific research is a key element for the development of a highly innovative market, and this makes it even more urgent to establish a European legal framework that recognizes and protects innovation in the industry.

Also, the EBIC (European Biostimulant Industry Consortium) is working in this direction in order to support the European authorities in the definition of an effective and shared regulation for the benefit of farmers, consumers, industry and the environment.
